Benjamin is ill and hasn't done much.He has been trying to work on his book "Leaves from an Editor's Note-Book and giving a survey of 25 years.I will be in NY and hope to come to Staten Island to have an interview with you. He has acute bronchitis and may not be able to come. Let me know and drop a line in care of Mrs. Diana Belais.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
